Supervision Support
Support & Supervision Toolkit for NCL primary care teams
NCL Training Hub is committed to improving supervision practices for effective teamwork.
Clinical supervision in primary care is at the core of how multi-disciplinary teams work together to deliver care. As delivery of patient care transforms and becomes increasingly complex, it is important to understand and improve our approaches to supervision of clinical practice.
The information and resources on this page are designed to help primary care teams adapt to these changes, ensuring the continued delivery of high-quality and effective supervision.
Each borough in NCL has a Multi-Professional Educator Group (MPEG) running workshops on clinical supervision skills for primary care staff. These workshops are part of a programme aimed at addressing key themes in the recent NCL Training Hub Clinical Supervision Review.
All practices in NCL can receive £300 per workshop as part of this programme. However, there is no limit on the number of staff from a practice who can attend the workshops.
Programme structure:
The supervision programme consists of two key parts:
Workshop attendance: each practice team must ensure at least one member of their team is registered and attends the relevant MPEG workshops. However, practices are encouraged to send additional staff – there is no cap on attendance, only the payment available per workshop.
Practice learning session: after attending each workshop, participants will receive an educational pack which will include resources to help them deliver the same workshop to staff within their practice. This session can take place during an existing training slot or team meeting.
Once the practice learning sessions has been delivered, the facilitator will complete a short feedback form, then the practice can invoice for the £300 workshop payment.

This guidance helps primary care networks (PCNs) and GP practices offer effective supervision for their expanding multidisciplinary teams (MDTs).
The guidance aims to:
Outline supervision principles for roles new to general practice
Highlight best practices to support strong clinical governance
Clarify the terminology and differences between clinical, professional, and educational supervision
Provide advice on training and workforce development
Following a review of clinical supervision for multi-professional teams across NCL, the NCL Training Hub Education Faculty has developed educational sessions to address key findings and support the day-to-day working of general practice teams. These sessions aim to provide educators and supervisors with professional development to enhance their skills in effective supervision and are delivered in local Multi-Professional Educator Group (MPEG) sessions.
Topics include:
Understanding Multidisciplinary Teams and Supervision:
Overview of roles within primary care teams
Importance of inter-professional supervision and its benefits
Resources for supporting supervision of various clinicians
Understanding pre-registration requirements for different roles
Maximising Learning through Feedback:
Types of feedback (educational, clinical, professional) supervisors provide
Methods for collecting feedback from learners
Effective ways to share feedback to enhance team supervision
Creating Positive Cultures and Managing Risk in Clinical Supervision:
Strategies for fostering positive work cultures in general practice
Effective management and mitigation of clinical work-related risks

NCL Workforce Ambassadors are available to support Clinical Pharmacist roles and the Physician Associate roles. Workforce Ambassadors support and enable the development of these roles alongside key stakeholders, and can provide advice and support on:
Developing connections with others in the role
Accessing peer support
Career and professional development pathways
Guiding educators in these roles through the educator approval process
More information about NCL Workforce Ambassadors is available from the NCL roles pages:
In January 2024, the NCL Training Hub Faculty and Quality team conducted an online survey with primary care teams to review clinical supervision.
The survey aimed to:
Examine existing supervision models in NCL
Detect areas needing additional support for effective clinical supervision of multidisciplinary teams
Identify opportunities to support clinical supervision in practice
The survey was intended for:
Supervisees: Clinicians or professionals in general practice seeking regular input from senior colleagues
Clinical Supervisors: Experienced clinicians available for immediate questions and debriefs during patient contact (named or on-the-day duty clinician)
Educational Supervisors: Senior clinicians with designated time for regular meetings with supervisees to support supervisees with training and professional development
