Workshops to support clinical supervision and leadership skills for multi-professional teams

The NCL Training Hub Supervision Support Programme is a series of workshops aimed at supporting primary care teams develop and refine their clinical supervision and leaderships skills to support multi-disciplinary team working, staff wellbeing, and safe clinical practice. Each borough has a Multi-Professional Educator Group (MPEG) led by an experienced primary care educator who develops and runs the workshops.

All practices in NCL can receive £300 per workshop as part of this programme.

This programme was developed to address the learning needs identified in the NCL Training Hub’s Clinical Supervision Review for primary care teams.

This page provides information about the programme, including upcoming workshops, FAQ and links to educational resources.

For practices that were not able to attend workshops 1, 2 or 3, you can register your interest in the catch-up session here.

After attending each workshop, participants will receive an educational pack which will include resources to help them deliver the same workshop to staff within their practice. This session can take place during an existing training slot or team meeting.

The workshops are run by your borough’s Multi-Professional Educator Group (MPEG). To learn more about your local MPEG and Borough Programme Director, head to: https://www.ncltraininghub.org/training-and-support/faculty-and-quality/education-faculty/about-your-borough.

Learning resources

Each workshop includes a set of educational resources designed to help attendees share the learning with their practice teams.

You can download and share the materials from each session by clicking the link below.

Practice payments and programme structure

All practices in NCL can receive £300 per workshop as part of this programme.

The supervision programme consists of two key parts:

  1. Workshop attendance:  each practice team must ensure at least one member of their team is registered and attends the relevant MPEG workshops. However, practices are encouraged to send additional staff – there is no cap on attendance, only the payment available per workshop.

  1. Practice learning session: after attending each workshop, participants will receive an educational pack which will include resources to help them deliver the same workshop to staff within their practice. This session can take place during an existing training slot or team meeting.

Once the practice learning sessions has been delivered, the facilitator will complete a short feedback form, then the practice can invoice for the £300 workshop payment.

Our FAQ section below provides helpful information that practice teams and educators might have about the programme and the workshops.

Programme FAQs - which roles should sign up to benefit from the workshops

Please see below to learn more about how the programme can help you develop in your Primary Care role and how your practice team can benefit.

FAQs on who can join the programme

Why should my practice attend Supervision Support Programme workshops?

Workshops are based on addressing barriers to effective supervision and are further informed by feedback received during the programme from workshop attendees and practice teams. Programme resources will form a toolkit, built by consensus across NCL Primary Care teams, to support supervisors and multi-professional teams to strengthen supervision in practice.

My practice has well established supervision – how can workshops benefit us?

Your practice can share examples of how your team delivers supervision and you can share resources to feed into the toolkit for use across NCL. Workshops will enable you to link up with other practices in your PCN and borough to consider how supervision principles can be developed to support with wider neighbourhood working. Your practice can highlight participation when contributing to your PCN’s NSHE Self-Assessment exercise.

My practice is less established at delivering supervision – how can workshops benefit us?

Your practice can realise the benefits from establishing effective supervision, for example on team wellbeing and retention. Workshops do not require a prior level of understanding and workshops offer recaps on previous topics – including up-to-date definitions of different supervision types and what they mean in practice.

How are the Supervision Support Programme workshops relevant to me?

Workshops are open to all Primary Care roles. See below for how workshops can be relevant to you.

I am a senior GP/partner in my practice: you can share your supervision experiences and contribute to case studies. You can also play an important role in providing peer support across your borough in supporting colleagues less confident in delivering supervision. As an approved educator, you can also highlight this when submitting your reflective statements as part of the NSHE PCN Self-Assessment exercise.

I am a junior clinician: you can benefit from hearing how colleagues have overcome some of the barriers to delivering effective supervision. Workshops are an opportunity to meet colleagues from across your borough and be introduced to your local Multi-Professional Educator Group, which supports educators and supervisors at all levels, and can the the first step towards applying for educator approval.

I hold a multi-professional clinical role: You can help support supervisors of other roles to better understand how to support supervisees across multi-professional teams to help your practice get the most out of your team members. You might also want to develop your own supervision skills to support an application to become an approved multi-professional educator.

I am a practice manager/non clinical role – should I attend?

You can join to share your practice’s approach towards managing effective multi-professional teams and bring your experiences of shared working practices to support this that might exist across your PCN. You can also share the learning with your practice teams and feedback on their behalf.

Workshop feedback

‘Looking forward to sharing valuable key concepts with wider team in my practice.’

‘Felt really safe! Was thought-provoking. I have ideas to try implementing in my practice’.
