NCL Training Hub is pleased to advise you about the Legacy Nurse Mentor Programme. We have a bank of experienced General Practice Nurses who are available to give support and provide mentorship in practice to Nurses; Nursing Associates; Allied Health Professionals & HCAs across NCL.

What are Legacy Nurse Mentor?

Legacy Nurse Mentors are experienced nurses who play a vital role in supporting and developing the primary care nursing workforce. This programme ensures we retain the valuable expertise of late-career colleagues while providing a meaningful and rewarding opportunity to give back to the profession.

We invite nurses, employers, and aspiring mentees to be part of this initiative—whether by becoming a mentor, supporting staff participation, or seeking mentorship to advance clinical skills.

For Learners: Clinicians Seeking Mentorship Support (APPLICATIONS OPEN)

Do you want to deepen your knowledge in a particular clinical area?

NCL Training Hub is running a pilot programme looking for Nurses/Nursing Associates/HCAs in Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington who would be interested in receiving support by a Legacy Nurse Mentor. Interested clinicians will have a chance of receiving mentorship on areas such as Diabetes, Women’s health, Spirometry, Asthma and more!

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Matching: Eligible and approved learners are paired with a mentor based on their chosen competencies and borough.

  2. Pre-Mentorship Evaluation: Learners complete a pre-mentorship evaluation form.

  3. Initial Pairing/Contact: Learners and mentors will be matched by the training hub. The allocated mentor reaches out to arrange a learning needs assessment.

  4. Learning Plan Development: The mentor and learner collaborate on a structured plan, agreeing on session dates and times.

  5. Clinical Access: Learners may need to ensure access to a clinic where patients relevant to their competency can be seen.

  6. Mentorship Sessions: Learner and mentor engage in scheduled mentorship sessions based on the agreed plan.

  7. Post-Mentorship Evaluation: Upon completion, the learner submits a post-mentorship evaluation form.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Must be Nurse/Nurse associate/HCA/Allied Health Professionals

  • Looking for mentorship in a clinical area

  • Completed foundation training in the relevant clinical area

  • Have a dedicated supervisor in practice

  • Willing to have mentor sit in clinics with them

  • Support of Practice

For Mentors: Clinicians Interested in Becoming a Mentor

Are you interested in becoming an educator? Do you want to inspire the next generation of the nursing workforce?

NCL Training Hub is running a programme looking for Nurses in Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington who would be interested in becoming a Legacy Nurse Mentor.

A Legacy Nurse Mentor will mentor clinicians who want to deepen their knowledge in a particular clinical area such as Diabetes, Women’s health, Respiratory etc by supporting learners when seeing patients within the relevant clinical area. Mentors would also have the opportunity to deliver group CPD sessions, sharing knowledge with a broader audience.

Eligibility criteria of a Legacy Nurse Mentor?

  • SSSA Trained/Willing to be trained

  • Minimum of 5 years as a registered nurse in primary care

  • Proof of CPD

  • Willingness to travel across NCL

  • Proof of indemnity insurance

Shortlisting & Interview

  • Your completed application will be checked against a shortlisting criteria

  • If shortlisted, an interview will be arranged with a Nurse Lead

Onboarding

  • If successful, a Service Level Agreement will need to be reviewed and signed

  • The successful Legacy Nurse Mentor will be sent key onboarding documents and resources

Mentoring

  • Mentors will be matched with learners who are in need of additional support in specific clinical areas in practice on an adhoc basis.
