Module content: (total of 10 hours learning)

Unit 1: COPD Diagnosis


Part 1 E-learning (1.5-2hrs) To be completed between 19th May - 2nd June 2025

  • Setting the scene: COPD in the UK and globally

  • Structure and function of a normal respiratory system

  • COPD on the inside: the pathophysiological changes that occur in COPD

  • COPD on the outside: clinical signs and symptoms

  • The importance of history taking 

  • Spirometry as the confirmatory test

  • Making a diagnosis in line with current guidance


Part 2 Live webinar - 2nd June 2025 (2:00-3:00pm)

  • Case study based discussion to consolidate learning

  • Q&A

 

Unit 2: COPD Management: treatment


Part 1 E-learning (1.5-2hrs) To be completed between 2nd June - 16th June 2025

  • The aim of COPD management

  • The pharmacology of COPD: 

    • Bronchodilators (SABAs, LABAs & LAMAs) 

    • Inhaled corticosteroids in combination with LABA (ICS/LABA)

    • Triple therapy (ICS/LABA/LAMA)

    • Mucolytics 

  • Current guidance on the management of COPD

  • The indications for ICS and de-escalation of ICS where appropriate

  • Assessment and management of exacerbation


Part 2 Live webinar - 16th June 2025 (2:00-3:00pm)

  • Case study based discussion to consolidate learning

Unit 3: Providing an effective COPD review including non-pharmacological options


Part 1 E-learning (1.5-2hrs) To be completed between 16th June - 30th June 2025

  • The purpose of the COPD review

  • Assessing symptoms (MRC & CAT score)

  • Assessment of lung function

  • Pulmonary rehabilitation

  • Holistic assessment: identifying co morbidities

  • Inhaler technique and tailoring the device to the patient

  • COPD action plan and supported self-management


Part 2 Live webinar (1 hour) - 30th June 2025 (2:00-3:00pm)

  • Case study based discussion to consolidate learning

  • Q&A

Quiz hosted in Google Classroom to complete. Full feedback given on marking.

The 10 hours of e-learning is spread over 6 weeks as above. You will receive a certificate on completion for 10 hours of CPD.
