Suicide Awareness and Response using SAFETool e-learning

In 2025, the NCL Suicide Prevention Programme rolled out Suicide Awareness and Response e-learning to local primary care colleagues. This 3.5-hour e-learning training course can be completed at your own pace and is designed to equip clinical staff with the knowledge and tools to navigate a conversation about suicidal thoughts. It offers access to SAFETool, a recording template to support clinical decision making and suicide safety planning.

So far, 80 colleagues from local surgeries have completed the e-learning and feedback has been excellent, with many reporting increased confidence and the intent to embed their learning into their practice moving forwards.

In addition, we are pleased to say that we have now been able to extend this opportunity to Physician Associates working across North Central London. Please note: for a Physician Associate to access the e-learning, there needs to be a supervising clinician in the surgery who has already completed the e-learning and is familiar with the SAFETool. Please discuss with your colleagues about whether this applies to your surgery and encourage them to enrol if not.

If you haven’t registered for e-learning, there are still spaces available - please visit Suicide Awareness and Response e-learning for Primary Care - NCL ICB General Practice Website to enrol. Please email ncl.suicideprevention@barnet.gov.uk for more details."
