DOAC Webinar 2: Stroke prevention strategies: Warfarin vs DOACs, stroke vs bleeding risk, switching from warfarin to DOAC

DOAC Webinars for primary care staff

The ICB has commissioned an anticoagulation and stroke prevention education package from Helicon Health for all primary care staff involved in caring for patients on oral coagulation.  This includes both eLearning and a series of four webinars. The information about the eLearning has been uploaded on the NCL TH website: https://www.ncltraininghub.org/news/doac-e-learning-available-for-clinical-staff

The series of webinars will be held at intervals up until next summer. The webinars are suitable for all clinical staff caring for patients with Atrial Fibrillation or who may be at risk of stroke.  All webinars will be delivered by Dr. Yassir Javaid: Clinical Subject Matter Expert (GP with a specialist interest in cardiology).

Dr Javaid qualified from Cambridge University and completed his VTS training in Northampton. He has a specialist interest in cardiology and echocardiography and was a clinical lead in the Northamptonshire Community Cardiology service, which had a focus on patients with heart failure and valve disease. He was also the primary care Cardiovascular lead for the East Midlands Clinical Network from 2013-2020. He was named Pulse “GP of the Year” in 2015 for his work in reducing stroke emergency admissions in the East Midlands. He is on the editorial board for the British Journal of Cardiology and a trustee of Heart Valve Voice.

This webinar will look at risk stratification strategies for stroke prevention and compare the use of Chads-Vasc, HasBled and Orbit as bleeding risk scores. An assessment of paroxysmal vs persistent Vs permanent AF will be discussed, and anti-coagulation strategies for relevant patients will be presented. The importance of monitoring patients on anti-coagulation and approaches to adjusting medication will also feature. Dr Javaid will present clinical scenarios and discuss the range of options for patients with this condition. This will include minor vs major surgery, patients requiring antiplatelet treatment for coronary disease, how to switch from warfarin to a DOAC.
