The Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme (ARRS) provides funding to support the continued expansion of the primary care workforce across England. Since the introduction of ARRS roles, the scheme has significantly increased workforce capacity and remains a key element of workforce planning within Primary Care Networks (PCNs).

Through ARRS, general practice can access funding to recruit or engage a wide range of roles, including a number of Allied Health Professionals (AHPs). PCNs can use this scheme to support the recruitment of the following five AHP roles:

These roles are intended to enhance multidisciplinary teams and help alleviate pressure on GPs by enabling more specialist care within the community.

Additional AHP roles (Not currently covered under ARRS)

Additional AHP roles that currently fall outside of the ARRS Scheme include the following:

  • Art therapists

  • Drama therapists

  • Music therapists

  • Operating department practitioners

  • Orthoptists

  • Osteopaths

  • Prosthetists and orthotists

  • Radiographers

  • Speech and language therapists
