The NHS People Plan outlines the ambition to enable NHS organisations to create cultures of wellbeing, through encouraging wellbeing conversations and the introduction of networks of Health and Wellbeing Champions.

We are looking for individuals from primary care teams to take on the role of Health and Wellbeing Champion for their organisation and join the NCL Champion Network!

What are Health and Wellbeing Champions?

Health and Wellbeing Champions are individuals who work at all levels of the NHS, from all demographics and roles, who will promote, identify and signpost their colleagues to local and national health and wellbeing support offers.

Who can be a Health and Wellbeing Champion?

A Health and Wellbeing Champion role is not intended to be a full time, new or paid role within an organisation. It is intended to be filled by colleagues within an organisation or team, who have a particular interest in health and wellbeing and who are keen to support the wellbeing of their colleagues.

Typical tasks of a health champion might include:

  • Signposting colleagues to support and advice

  • Establishing staff wellbeing as a regular agenda item at team meetings/huddles

  • Supporting team in undertaking any activities related to the new QOF Wellbeing Indicators

  • Obtaining feedback/suggestions from their team on health and wellbeing activities

  • Encouraging staff to take part in wellbeing events or raise awareness of health campaigns

The role should not take up a large amount of your time, and the benefits to your team could be significant!

What support is available to me as a Champion?

Local Support

The NCL Health & Wellbeing Champion network will be invited to an online community of practice, to network with others Champions across NCL, receive local and national updates, share ideas and ask questions. The group will be invited to help shape the strategy and regularity of meetings – ensuring that the support provided aligns with the workload and needs those involved.

Nes Yilmaz, Health and Wellbeing Lead at the NCL Training Hub is directly contactable between network meetings, should Champions need advice on signposting and supporting their team.

National Support

NHSE has provided an optional e-learning module for Health and Wellbeing Champions to complete to understand more about the role. This training can be accessed on the Health Education England e-Learning for Healthcare website. This is not, however, an essential step to signing up as a Champion.

There is also a series of optional monthly learning sessions for Champions provided by NHSE, with themed topics and the opportunity to join a safe space where you can share learning with other Champions. A list of the upcoming development sessions can be found through the link below:
