Leadership Development
This page outlines a range of leadership development offers available for different stages of a career for both clinical and non-clinical staff working in primary care.
Evidence shows that confident and capable leaders / managers drive improved organisational outcomes, including enhanced productivity, staff engagement and retention.
In the context of the NHS 10 Year Plan, the skills and capabilities of leaders in primary care will be critical to deliver the organisational change required for the successful development of Integrated Neighbourhood Teams. This page compiles a selection of leadership development opportunities currently available through NCL Training Hub and more widely to NHS staff members.
NHS Elect
NCL Training Hub is now a member of NHS Elect. Anyone working in primary care in any of the five boroughs in NCL can access a variety of training and development opportunities for free.
There are over 140 live webinars and 20 online training courses that can support your development, as well as over 200 resources that can make your job easier. Leadership Development and Organisational Development is a key area covered within NHS elect.
NHS Leadership Academy
The NHS Leadership Academy offers a suite of programmes designed to help individuals across the NHS realise their leadership potential and deliver high standards of care.
Some programmes are accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), while others are delivered through apprenticeship routes via partner providers. View the accordions below to see details of the programmes offered.
This foundation-level programme is ideal for individuals stepping into their first leadership or management role. Delivered online as a self-guided series of short courses, it includes interactive discussions and is free of charge. This programme is often offered as an optional addition to apprenticeships programmes.

Designed for first-time leaders with formal responsibilities for people and services - this six month programme includes 100 hours of online study and three full-day behavioural workshops (currently delivered virtually). Participants should be able to apply the learning directly to their workplace.
The programme requires a commitment of a minimum of 5 hours of study per week. It costs £995 per person for those providing NHS-funded care however this programme can be offered as an optional add-on to some apprenticeship programmes.

The Rosalind Franklin programme is for clinicians or managers leading from the middle of health and care systems, aspiring to lead large and complex programmes, departments, services or systems of care.
The nine month programme supports people to become outstanding innovators, leaders, and team members working across the health and care system, to help improve services for people and communities that access them.
It includes eight workshop days and requires a commitment of approximately four to five hours a week to study.
It costs £1,200 per person(fully inclusive of all delivery and access to the virtual campus) and can be offered as optional add-on to some apprenticeships programmes.

The Nye Bevan programme accelerates people into executive roles that span organisational boundaries; and supports senior leaders to move beyond leadership within their area of expertise.
The programme is for senior clinical or non-clinical leaders aspiring to executive director (or equivalent) roles across the NHS, including providers, commissioning organisations, arm’s length bodies, national organisations, and wider health and care.
The time commitment is approximately 15 hours per week for 12 months.
The Nye Bevan programme cost per person is £4,500 - this is fully inclusive of all tuition, facilitation and access to the online virtual campus. This will also include accommodation and catering for in-person delivery.

Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are paid job opportunities that deliver a training programme through combined practical on-the-job training and classroom-based learning.
It’s possible to fully fund apprenticeships through the Government Levy making them a cost-effective way to address skills gaps within organisations. The below apprenticeships focus on leadership development:
The Team Leader apprenticeship (Level 3) is suitable for aspiring or first-time managers and typically runs for 15 months. This apprenticeship could apply to many roles in general practice or wider primary care- for example Senior Administrators who have oversight of people on career development pathway towards management
The Operations Manager apprenticeship (Level 5) is designed for individuals in roles such as Deputy Practice Manager, Practice Manager, or Business Manager, and runs for approximately 24 months. It focuses on leadership, strategic planning, and operational decision-making.
The Chartered Manager apprenticeship (Level 6) provides learning on a full range of management operations and strategic planning. This programme is for those responsible for long-term organisational success, managing people, projects, operations or services. It's equivalent to a degree and as such runs for approximately 48 months.

Advanced Practice
Advanced Practice (AP) is a level of clinical practice characterised by a high degree of autonomy and complex decision making. It is designed to transform and modernise pathways of care, enabling the safe and effective sharing of skills across traditional professional boundaries within clinical professions such as nursing, pharmacy, paramedics, and occupational therapy.
Advanced practitioners (APs) are healthcare professionals, educated to Master’s level or equivalent, with the skills and knowledge to allow them to expand their scope of practice to better meet the needs of the people they care for.
It's possible to become an Advanced Practitioner through three pathways:

NHS England -eLearning Management and Leadership Skills Programme
These e-learning modules are designed to develop your knowledge and understanding of a range of management and leadership topics. Each module covers real life examples that reinforce your understanding of the key principles and skills in that area. They are suitable for multi-professional health and social care team leaders and managers or aspiring managers at all levels. These modules were developed by the Yorkshire and the Humber elearning Club.
