New to Leadership Programme
The New to Leadership programme supports you at every step as you begin your leadership journey in the health and care system.
Are you stepping into a funded leadership role? Wherever you are making an impact - your practice, PCN, neighbourhood or wider primary care community, our tailored, wraparound support will help you confidently navigate your leadership journey and thrive in your role.
Here's what is included:
NCL mentors provide a holistic coaching approach that enables clinicians to optimise both their professional and personal lives. Mentoring clarifies priorities, strengthens self-leadership and decision-making, and helps individuals realise their full potential—benefiting not only them but also their teams and organisations.
We know that people grow, learn, thrive and excel when they are provided with specific interpersonal support.
What is the NCL mentoring scheme?
Our free, multi-professional mentoring scheme is open to all NCL primary care clinicians. Whatever your role or career stage, mentoring offers a safe, confidential space to reflect, learn and grow.
You’ll be paired with an experienced NCL based clinician mentor and meet monthly over a year (online or in person) to share experiences, gain fresh perspectives and receive guidance and support.
A flexible way to invest in yourself, your career and your wellbeing.
Who benefits from mentoring?
All clinicians, including those:
At the start of their careers
Moving into leadership roles
Planning their careers
Navigating challenges
Who need a mid-career boost
Planning the years leading up to retirement
Returning from significant leave
Taking on a teaching role
Wanting to maximise career enjoyment
What can mentees can expect from their mentor?
A supportive, attentive professional who listens without judgment and asks thoughtful questions to help clarify goals and identify practical ways to achieve them. Rather than offering advice, the mentor enables mentees to draw on their own insight and resourcefulness to develop solutions that are right for them. Sometimes, the mentor is just there to listen and support. At other times, they will signpost their mentee to useful resources.
Here’s what some of our mentees had to say:
"I have achieved a better work-life balance, and I am more open to taking up new opportunities.”
“I feel better equipped with strategies to deal with issues as they arise compared to before the mentoring. I've learnt to reflect better and focus on the bigger picture.”
“You felt like you were talking to a colleague. There was no hierarchical feel to it.”
Open to colleagues across the NCL primary care workforce, offering the chance to learn from others across the wider health and care system.
What is the shadowing scheme?
The shadowing scheme has been developed for any individual employed within the primary care workforce across NCL (Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey, and Islington) that would like to gain leadership experience from a colleague working in a leadership position elsewhere within the health care system.
The purpose of shadowing is to give an insight into understanding the interplays of healthcare & other sectors as well as access to the day-to-day experiences of leaders to help progress along the leadership journey.
The scheme has been developed to connect primary care colleagues with other professionals across the community, health, and social care, including the voluntary sector.
Our goal is to broaden individual perspectives beyond their own practice and workplace, allowing them to experience collaborative working across the local system. Previous participants have described their shadowing experiences as some of the most valuable parts of their programme, while the people that have been shadowed found it enjoyable and insightful, helping them reflect on their role within the wider system.
Bi-monthly, educator-led sessions to share best practice and work through challenges together.
Bi-monthly peer support sessions are run by our Programme Director, Dr Yasmin Rahman.
These are extremely helpful sessions and will:
Introduce you to the wider health system
Allow you to meet other colleagues in new to leadership roles
Provide a safe space to discuss issues you are having in general practice
